Your success, your style!

successful young man

I was speaking to a group of college students the other day. I asked them about their goals and purpose in life.

One of them, an ambitious young man sitting in the back row, declared: “My goal is to be a billionaire in ten years.”

Wow, a billionaire! A great goal to have.

“Your goal is to be a billionaire in 10 years,” I said. “That’s great!”

Then I asked him, “What are you doing today that will make you a billionaire in ten years?”

“What do you mean?” he retorted.

“Are you doing the things today that will make you a billionaire in 10 years?”

“I mean, I…” the young man fumbled. “There’s plenty of time.”

Plenty of time, hmmm. Plenty of time to hang around doing nothing.

Hey, you can’t say you want to be a billionaire and then spend time hanging around, sleeping all morning and watching TV all evening.

You can’t say you want to be the greatest athlete the world’s ever had and do nothing about it.

You can say you’ve got the talent and blame everyone for not giving you a break.

It doesn’t work that way.

You’ve got to pay the price and earn your own success. Nobody else will do it for you.

You’ve got to give up all your excuses and reasons why you can’t. You’ve got to focus on what you have, build on your strengths, learn new skills, just go out and do it.

Sure you’ll meet with failures, people will turn you down and the world may even call you a crazy fool and laugh at you.

But who the hell cares?

It’s your life. You’ve got goals to accomplish. Success is what counts eventually. The world will notice you and pay attention when you’ve become number one.

Until then, believe in the power of your vision and the certainty of the accomplishment of your goals. And keep working. If you fall or fail, dust yourself, wipe your tears and get going again.

That’s the way of excellence.
